Chapter 12

Dinner was another noisy affair with everyone on the ranch crowded around the big table, talking over each other. I was too tired to say much. Part of me longed to just crawl upstairs to bed but Liza had invited us on a trail ride to see Quarry and Marcus with the broodmare band that night and there was no way I was missing out on that.

Foaling season had been intense when I’d lived here and I had spent many late nights on foal watch. There had been so many amazing moments and one horrible, awful night when Red’s elderly mom Beezy had died. Her foal Figaro had been the one Folly had taken under her wing. We’d still had to bottle feed him of course, but she’d taken on the role of being his surrogate mom.

I’d had some idea of Rob and I slipping away on our own to have a peaceful trail ride with Liza and Justin but my plans went off the rails the second Nori overheard.

“We’re going on another trail ride?” she said excitedly. “I mean Maverick’s already been out today but maybe I can take one of the ranch horses if the ride isn’t too hard. Justin, could I take the paint? I mean Whiskey? He would be okay, wouldn’t he?”

“Umm, yeah, probably,” Justin said, breaking away from his conversation with his dad to answer her. “It’s an easy enough ride.”

“Great, and could Mara and Casey come, too? Rob and Astrid have their own horses, so that way Fenwick and Kestrel could get ridden, too.”

“Who?” Aunt Lillian asked, looking confused.

“The ranch horses,” Nori said, frowning. “Those are their names.”

“Oh, right. I lose track of those ones. They all blend together after a while.”

Luckily, she was looking back down at her dinner so she missed the dark look Nori sent her.

“Well Salsa and I are going, too,” Olive said firmly from her end of the table. “We’re not being left behind.”

In the end, everyone but Aunt Lillian and the sheep came, and it turned out to be almost as fun as if we’d snuck away on our own. Everyone was in high spirits. The horses perked up in the cooler evening air and got a little spring in their steps.

Red marched along underneath me, his nose bobbing happily and his ears pricked as he stared around his old home with interest. So far he seemed to be enjoying his vacation quite a bit.

The air had cooled down to a bearable level and as we climbed higher into the hills the temperature dropped steadily and a light breeze skittered across my arms.

“This is the scenic route,” I told Rob. “You can get down to the lake by going the other way too, but it’s not nearly so pretty.”

We wound our way through a small scrubby forest and then came out on the lower ridge that overlooked the valley and the lake below.

There were higher ridges above us where the views were even more spectacular, but this was pretty stunning.
